Painting Your Closet

I know for me, after years of living in the same house, I do sometimes think about painting my closets. Besides, what a fun project that sounds like, right? It's not like painting a whole room or the outside of your house. THAT sounds like work, right?

Maybe painting your closet a different color might also lift your mood every time you open it up (or walk into it) to reach in for something to wear for the day/evening.

That being said, if it's time to paint your closet, like it's time to paint mine, then consider these tips to follow to ensure your closet paint job is a total success:

  • 1. COLOR - Light colors like white, beige, and other pastel colors can make a small closet appear larger. Bright colors with a high-gloss finish can help reflect light in a dark closet, making it easier to find items. Research other closet (photos) online to get ideas for the color job you'd like to do in your closet.

  • 2. GETTING THE PAINT - When you're at the hardware store getting your paints, ask the paint rep (who works the counter where they help you with paint), for tips on what kind of paint to use to paint a closet and tell them how big your closet is. They can then sell you the right amount of paint. Also, tell them you'll paint two coats. So, double that single order of paint you thought you were going to get. Also, ask what tools to get and get them. Let the experts on hand tell you what you need so your closet paint job goes over with loads of success.

  • 3. GET READY - Remove any and all shelving, poles, hooks, hardware and anything else that's "easily" removable. Vacuum, dust and clean your closet thoroughly. Cover your floor with a plastic drop cloth, newspaper or towels.

  • 4. PRIME - Choose an angled brush preferably and apply primer along the edges of each closet wall.

  • 5. CUT IN - Now, use your angled brush again to paint along the edges of the walls with the paint color of your choice.

  • 6. PAINT - Use a paint roller to save time and paint all the remaining walls not painted. Plan on painting two coats of paint to really cover the walls nicely. Begin painting at the top of your closet and paint your way down the wall(s) with long, even strokes. You can use a foam brush if you happen to see any paint drips that don't look smooth. Catch them before they dry.

  • 7. PAINT THE OTHER PIECES OF YOUR CLOSET - Now, paint the other pieces of your closet that you took down like hooks, poles, etc. Place them on a lot of newspaper on the floor or drop cloth and paint away.

  • 8. ALLOW TO DRY - Let your closet and closet pieces dry for a day before putting all your clothes back in.

  • 9. DOCUMENT - Take pictures and video along your journey of painting your closet. If you like, post it on your social media channels and let folks learn how you did it and congratulate you too on a fine job you did!

  • 10. PUT YOUR CLOTHES BACK - After a day or so of drying, and you're sure there's no paint left to dry, start putting your clothes back into the closet. BUT WAIT!!!! TOSS OUT what you don't wear that often anymore to make room in your new closet for??? NEW CLOTHES! You see, this is also an opportunity for you to go through your wardrobe and pick out things you don't wear (that often) anymore and replace it with new stuff befitting for a brand new painted closet. Donate or sell what you don't want anymore while you're at it.

Hey, I hope these tips help. Let me know what you think and what you plan on doing with your closet if you plan to paint it. Send me a message! Would love to hear from you!
